Johnston City approves new alderman, police chief
JOHNSTON CITY — City alderman approved filling two vacancies Tuesday.
Longtime civic leader Dexter Page was approved to fill a Ward 2 aldermanic vacancy despite the fact he is the father-in-law of Alderman Bart Lind.
City mayor Jim Mitchell said he checked on nepotism laws and found that since neither Page nor Lind would be acting in supervisory role in relation to one another, there was no conflict with the city’s anti-nepotism ordinance.
“The attorney (City Attorney John Richey) said it was not a conflict of interest because they are not giving orders to each other,” Mitchell said.
Page is a former president of the library board and has been involved in many civic activities, Mitchell said.
Aldermen also approved the mayor’s appointment of Vernon Campbell as city police chief. He takes over for Dusty King who submitted a letter of resignation from the chief’s position earlier this month after serving in that capacity for 11 months.
King remains on the force, and his resignation was not performance related, the mayor said.
